Supermoon is a popular term, not an official phase. This almanac marks an exact full Moon as a supermoon when its direct geocentric distance is no more than 361,400 kilometres. Other published rules can produce a different list.
The Moon's orbit is elliptical, so its distance changes continuously. A nearby full Moon can look modestly larger and brighter than a distant one, but foreground scale and atmospheric colour often make the visual impression more dramatic.
