Waxing gibbous Moon from the UK
More than half of the disc is lit, on the right, with only a narrowing shaded wedge left on the other edge. The terminator, the edge of the shadow, bulges outwards instead of curving in as it does on a crescent.
It rises in the afternoon and is well up by sunset, high in the south in the early evening and setting after midnight. Each night it stays out later and the sky is brighter for longer.

What waxing gibbous means
Gibbous comes from the Latin for a hump: the lit part is bigger than a half disc but not yet full. Waxing means it is still growing.
It follows first quarter, at about 69% lit, and ends at about 96% lit, roughly two days before full Moon.
